How to Prepare for the NEBOSH DI1 Assessment
Start preparing before the assessment window opens so you are familiar with the format, syllabus and skills required
The assessment covers four main areas:
01
Simulation-Based Questions
You will work with a realistic workplace scenario and answer tasks based on the information provided.
The scenario may contain a lot of detail, so read it carefully and separate the important evidence from information that isn’t relevant to the task.
When answering:
- ✓ Read the complete scenario first.
- ✓ Identify facts relevant to each task.
- ✓ Check exactly what the question requires.
- ✓ Use scenario evidence where appropriate.
- ✓ Apply your H&S knowledge to the situation.
- ✓ Explain your points clearly.
- ✓ Complete every required task.
Avoid generic answers. Your response should show how your knowledge applies to the situation presented.
02
Workplace Activities
The workplace activities test your ability to put your H&S knowledge into practice in a real organisation.
The organisation does not necessarily have to be your own workplace, but it needs to be suitable for the activities you are required to complete.
When carrying out the tasks:
- ✓ Understand the organisation and its activities.
- ✓ Focus on what the assessment asks you to investigate.
- ✓ Use relevant workplace evidence.
- ✓ Apply your H&S knowledge to your findings.
- ✓ Consider both good practice and areas for improvement where relevant.
- ✓ Explain the reasons behind your findings.
The aim isn’t simply to find faults. It is to demonstrate that you can assess a workplace objectively and apply your professional knowledge.
03
Reflective Tasks
Reflective tasks ask you to draw on your own personal or professional experiences.
Read moreShow less
Rather than simply describing what happened, explain what you did, what you learned and how the experience helped you develop.
A simple structure is:
Experience
→Action
→Learning
→Development
Keep your response focused and follow any guidance provided for the task.
04
Short Research Project
The research project requires you to investigate a specified topic and develop an evidence-based response.
Start by understanding the research question before gathering information.
When completing the project:
- ✓ Use credible and relevant sources.
- ✓ Consider different evidence or viewpoints.
- ✓ Evaluate the information you find.
- ✓ Develop your own argument.
- ✓ Support your points with evidence.
- ✓ Reference your sources appropriately.
- ✓ Fact-check and proofread your work.
Don’t rush straight into writing. Allow enough time to research, evaluate the evidence, draft and review your response.

Before the interview, review your submission and be ready to discuss your answers, evidence, research and reasoning in your own words.
The closing interview is a required part of the NEBOSH assessment process.
