How to Pass the NEBOSH DI2 and DI3 Assessments

The DI2 and DI3 assessments require you to apply your knowledge rather than simply recall information from the syllabus.

For each unit, you will receive a workplace scenario followed by a series of tasks. You need to understand the situation, identify the information relevant to each task and apply the appropriate H&S knowledge.

The scenario may contain a lot of detail and supporting information, so a structured approach can help you work through the assessment effectively.

Follow these six practical steps to approach your case study answers clearly and effectively.

01

Read the Full Scenario

Start by reading the complete case study to understand the workplace situation. Then read it again with the individual tasks in mind.

Look for the key facts, H&S issues, evidence relevant to each task, your role within the scenario, important actions or events, and relevant supporting information.

Not every detail will necessarily be useful, so focus on the information that helps you answer the task.

Look for:

  • ✓Key facts and H&S issues.
  • ✓Evidence relevant to each task.
  • ✓Your role within the scenario.
  • ✓Important actions, conditions or events.
  • ✓Relevant supporting information.
  • ✓Information that helps answer the task.

02

Understand What Each Task Requires

Before writing, check exactly what you have been asked to do.

Pay attention to the command word and the marks available. Your response should answer the specific task rather than become a general explanation of the topic.

03

Apply Your Knowledge to the Scenario

DI2 and DI3 are about applying your knowledge, not simply recalling what you learnt during the course.

Where required, connect your technical knowledge directly to evidence from the case study.

Simple approach:

Scenario Evidence

→

→

H&S Reasoning

Apply the right knowledge:

  • ✓For DI2, apply the relevant workplace health knowledge.
  • ✓For DI3, apply the relevant workplace safety knowledge.

04

Keep Your Answers Clear and Relevant

Avoid lengthy introductions or background information that does not answer the question.

Instead, make a relevant point, support it with scenario evidence where required, explain why it matters, keep each point focused, and avoid repeating the same argument.

Your answer should clearly show how your knowledge applies to the situation presented.

Keep each answer focused:

  • ✓Make a relevant point.
  • ✓Support it with scenario evidence where required.
  • ✓Explain why it matters.
  • ✓Keep each point focused.
  • ✓Avoid repeating the same argument.
  • ✓Show how your knowledge applies to the situation.

05

Use Supporting Information Effectively

You may receive supporting information alongside the scenario.

Read it carefully and decide which information is relevant to each task. Use it where it supports your answer rather than including information simply because it has been provided.

06

Review Your Case Study Answers

Once you have completed the tasks, read through your answers again and check:

Final review checklist:

  • ✓Have I answered the actual question?
  • ✓Have I followed the command word?
  • ✓Have I used relevant scenario evidence?
  • ✓Have I explained my points clearly?
  • ✓Is my answer easy to follow?
  • ✓Have I included anything irrelevant or repetitive?

Use your final review to improve your answers and correct any errors before submission.

What to Focus on in the DI2 Assessment

DI2 – Controlling Workplace Health Issues focuses on applying your knowledge to workplace health issues presented within the case study.
When reviewing the scenario, identify information relevant to workplace health and consider how your occupational health knowledge applies to the particular situation.
Keep your response connected to the scenario evidence and specific task rather than providing a general explanation of workplace health.

What to Focus on in the DI3 Assessment

DI3 – Controlling Workplace Safety Issues focuses on applying your knowledge to workplace safety issues presented within the case study.

When analysing the scenario, identify relevant safety issues, actions, conditions or events and apply your workplace safety knowledge accordingly.

Your response should demonstrate how your knowledge applies to the specific workplace situation rather than relying on generic safety information.

How to Answer DN2/DI2 and DN3/DI3 Case Study?

  • Have an understanding of the quality of your answer.

  • Avoid unnecessary introductory paragraphs.

  • Unless you give a direct answer, you lose the chance to obtain marks.

  • Focus on the details given in the case study and look deeply into whether it shows a safe or unsafe activity.

  • Don’t use long paragraphs; make crisp answers pointing directly to the answer.

  • Write simple and easy-to-read answers.

  • Each paragraph should end by leading into the next, ensuring the right flow to the answer.

  • Make sure that the answer makes sense, is relevant to the question asked, adheres to the given structure and gives a direct answer.

From start to end, a total of 20 working days is available for every case study. Plan to make the most of it.

A closing interview follows each digital assessment to help confirm that the submitted work is your own.
